A note from the founder
I started PhantomMysticRealm from a narrow terrace off Little Collins Street in 2018, back when the only way to hear about a good roguelike in Australia was word of mouth at the Melbourne game bars. What began as a printed zine pinned to café boards became this journal.
I still cut every header illustration as an actual woodblock before scanning it — the carved lines and ink grain you see are pulled from real prints, not filters. I play each game to its credits before writing a single word, and I never take publisher money for a score.

Questions from the guild
Never. Every score is independent and every game is bought at retail or played on a no-strings press key that carries no score obligation. If a piece is ever sponsored, it is labelled clearly at the top and is never a review.
A new indie review lands every Thursday, a Lore Excavation on the first of each month, and printmaker's guides whenever a major RPG releases. The guild letter goes out Sunday mornings, Melbourne time.
Yes. Each header plate is cut into lino or pear wood at the studio, inked, and hand-pulled before it's scanned. The grain and broken lines are from the physical print, so no two plates are identical. Originals are occasionally sold to subscribers.
Absolutely — small Australian and New Zealand studios especially. Send a short pitch through the contact form below with a build or store link. I read everything myself and reply within about a week, even to a no.
The journal is free. An optional AU$6/month guild membership supports the print work and unlocks the full high-resolution plate archive plus early access to guides. There's no paywall on any review or lore piece.
